Ghostkeep Privacy Policy

In short: Ghostkeep stores your chats only on your own computer, encrypted with a passphrase only you know. The developer never receives, sees, or has access to any of your data. Ghostkeep has no servers, no analytics and no tracking.

What Ghostkeep is

Ghostkeep is a Chrome extension that saves your ChatGPT temporary chats, and the files in them, so they aren't lost when you close the browser. It is an independent project and is not made by or affiliated with OpenAI.

What data Ghostkeep handles

• Conversation content: the text of the ChatGPT chats you have open, including your messages and ChatGPT's replies, and each chat's title and address.
• Files: files you upload to a chat and files ChatGPT creates for you (for example, documents and images).
• Settings: your choices in the Ghostkeep popup.

Ghostkeep only reads pages on chatgpt.com and chat.openai.com. It does not read any other websites, your browsing history, or anything else on your computer.

Where your data is stored

• On your computer only. Chats are stored in Chrome's local storage for the extension, and files in the extension's local database.
• Encrypted backup. Ghostkeep also writes an encrypted copy to a "Ghostkeep Backup" folder in your Downloads folder, so you can restore your chats if the extension is removed. You can turn this off in the popup. If your Downloads folder is synced by a service such as OneDrive, the encrypted backup files are synced by that service like any other file.
• Encryption. Every chat and file is encrypted (AES-256-GCM, with keys protected by an RSA-3072 key pair whose private key is encrypted with your passphrase using PBKDF2-SHA256). Reading saved chats always requires your passphrase. Your passphrase itself is never stored.

What Ghostkeep sends over the internet

Nothing to the developer or any third party. The only network requests Ghostkeep makes are to ChatGPT's own servers (chatgpt.com and oaiusercontent.com), to download files that already appear in your chat, so they can be saved. These are the same requests your browser makes when you click a file in ChatGPT yourself.

Sharing and selling

Ghostkeep does not sell, share, rent or transfer your data to anyone. It does not use your data for advertising, for credit or lending decisions, or for any purpose other than saving your chats for you.

Your control

• Open saved chats from the Ghostkeep popup to read, export or delete any chat or file.
• "Erase all saved chats and reset" removes everything stored in the extension and makes the backup unreadable.
• Removing the extension deletes its local storage. To also remove the backup, delete the "Ghostkeep Backup" folder in your Downloads folder.
• If you forget your passphrase, nobody, including the developer, can recover your chats.

Children

Ghostkeep is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
